Medical Departments

Gastroenterology

The Gastroenterology Department (liver, gallbladder,pancreas) offers the latest treatment for hepatitis as a cooperative clinic for liver disease. In addition, treatment is offered for tumors and a variety of diseases of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and esophogeal and gastric varices.
The gastroenterology (gastrointestinal, esophageal) department provides diagnosis and treatment for acute diseases of the digestive system organs (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine), neoplastic disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. etc.

Neurology

Providing emergency, outpatient and inpatient care for a variety of illnesses including central nervous system infections, cerebrovascular diseases, dementia, Parkinson's disease, spinocerebellar degeneration, motor neuron disease, and autoimmune diseases.

Cardiovascular Medicine

Treatment of cardiovascular disorders, such as angina, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmia, valvular disease, cardiomyopathy; and the treatment of thrombosis disorders such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and pulmonary thromboembolism (economy-class syndrome).

Respiratory Medicine

Treatment of respiratory disorders including lung cancer, pneumonia and other infectious diseases, interstitial lung diseases, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumothorax, and empyema. The smoking cessation clinic runs a smoking cessation program.

Hematology

Responsible for treatment of hematological malignancies such as leukemia, malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndrome, in addition to the care of blood count abnormalities and the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells to treat hematological malignancies.

Nephrology

Treatment of nephritis and nephrotic syndrome to prevent end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Rheumatology

The department strives towards the early diagnosis and treatment of incurable diseases that exhibit multiple symptoms including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, polymyositismixed connective tissue disease, vasculitis syndrome, and Sjogren's syndrome.

Diabetes and Endocrinology

We provide patients with diabetes and other metabolic and endocrine disorders with the highest standard of patient care taking a holistic and individualized approach by respecting patients’ autonomy and dignity.

Geriatric Medicine

We provide elderly patients often with multiple medical conditions with the highest standard of patient care taking a holistic and individualized approach by respecting patients’ autonomy and dignity.

Clinical Oncology

With a focus on a standardized level of treatment that adheres to clinical practice guidelines, the department institutes pharmacotherapy for incurable, progressive, and recurrent cancer in all internal organs.

Pediatrics

To achieve the departmental aim of "a comprehensive health care for pediatric disorders", treatment is divided into four groups: neonatal care, general care, cardiovascular care, and blood-tumor care.

Psychiatry

Designated as the central prefectural hospital for psychiatric patients with physical complications, the department closely cooperates with other departments to provide a balanced treatment for psychiatric patients with serious physical complications, and psychiatric patients experiencing pregnancy and childbirth.

Urology

The department employs a variety of state-of-the-art treatment modalities at the forefront of medical care in the field of robotic and laparoscopic surgery, urological cancer,kidney transplantation, neurogenic bladder and urinary incontinence.

Ophthalmology

To fulfill our role as the only ophthalmology department in the prefecture to be given the highest rank of “superior medical institution,” we provide medical care for all eye related disorders, with a particular emphasis on the treatment of diseases that cause severe visual impairment such as glaucoma and vitreoretinal disease.

Otorhinolaryngology

The department of otorhinolaryngology strives to provide extensive and advanced analysis and medical care for all diseases affecting the ears, nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, and cranium.

Diagnostic Radiology

Providing image diagnosis for all departments within the hospital, and responds to tests requests from outside the hospital.

Radiation Oncology

With a focus on treatment that directs rays from outside the body into the tumor (external radiotherapy) and the cooperation of the departments of internal medicine and surgery, we provide treatment for various types of malignant tumors and also respond to requests from outside of the hospital.

Anesthesiology

An accredited anesthetic specialist provides general care and tailors treatments to match the individual needs of the patient.

Rehabilitation Medicine

Providing treatment in various areas including encephalopathy, neurological disease, spinal and spinal cord disease, orthopedic disease, respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, and endocrine disorders.

Emergency Medicine

Our team consists of accredited specialists in the following fields: emergency medicine, intensive care, surgery, burn injuries, trauma care, orthopedics, and anesthetics. The exceptional expertise and knowledge of this department is one of our key features.

Gastroenterological Surgery

We provide surgical treatment for patients with disorders,especially cancers,in the liver, biliary tract, pancreas, stomach, and colon. While essentially adhering to the recommended surgical procedures based on clinical evidence,we also have some advanced programs to provide our own original surgical options for patients who are not eligible for standard treatments.

Chest Surgery

While the focus is on surgical treatment for patients of neoplastic diseases such as lung cancer and metastatic lung tumor, the department is proactive in implementing minimally invasive surgical procedures for early-stage lung cancer such as video-assisted thoracic surgery and segmentectomy.

Esophageal Surgery

Providing surgical treatment for esophageal cancer and other esophageal diseases and disorders. Our priority is the total eradication of esophageal cancer, and the treatment focus is to cure the cancer completely.

Breast and Endocrine Surgery

Diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and breast disorders, and surgery for thyroid, parathyroid, and other endocrine organs.

Cardiovascular Surgery

As the last bastion of cardiovascular surgery in Akita Prefecture, we provide surgery for congenital and acquired heart diseases, and for vascular diseases within the large and peripheral arteries.

Neurosurgery

We provide advanced and standard treatments primarily for cerebrovascular disease, cerebral tumors, and neural emergencies (stroke, trauma, etc.)

Pediatric Surgery

Providing surgery for patients from newborns through to adolescents.

Obstetrics and Gynecology

The gynecology department provides health care to support each major stage of a woman’s life from sperm-ovum embryo and perinatal period, through to puberty and menopause.

Orthopedic Surgery

The department provides treatment for patients with mobility disorders such as herniated disc, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue neoplasm, sports injuries, fractures, and dislocations.

Dermatology

The department provides advanced treatment for patients with various skin cancers as well as common skin diseases.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The department provides treatment and surgery for patients with various cancers as well as common skin diseases including keloid ingrown nail blepharoptosis scar contracture lymphedema.

Division of Clinical Pathology

Utilizing both clinical pathology and cytology, we aim to ensure quick and accurate reporting to the patient.

Dentistry and Oral Surgery

As a tertiary care center for oral surgery in Akita Prefecture, the department provides treatment for issues including maxillofacial injuries, inflammation, tumors and cysts, TMJ disorders, impacted wisdom teeth and difficult tooth extractions, dental implants, cleft lip and palate, and jaw deformities.

Special Outpatient Services

Kampo (Eastern Medicine)

Doctors specializing in both Western and Eastern medicine utilize traditional Eastern herbal medicinal treatments to suit the needs of the individual patient.

Palliative Care Center

Our clinic provides comfort care for families and patients experiencing illness or undergoing treatment to improve the well being of body, mind, and spirit. We also offer diagnosis and counseling for lymphedema.

Divisions

Central Laboratory Division

The central laboratory is responsible for the management of all information of laboratory testing, and for promptly providing high-quality data. Testing status and accuracy / precision verification are always available.

Central Operating Division

1) To ensure the safety of patients undergoing surgery, 2) to create an efficient and comfortable working environment that enables doctors, nursing staff, and core medical staff to perform at their optimum. 3) To provide state-of-the-art medical care across all departments.

Central Radiology Division

The division utilizes radiotherapy to perform various tests and treatments under the direction of radiologists. The division can be broadly divided into the radiology diagnostic image division and the radiation oncology.

Central Supplying Division

The central supplying division consists of two divisions. The first responsible for the provision, cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical equipment, and the second, the SPD Center, which oversees the management of all medical materials.

Intensive Care Unit

ICU provides respiratory monitoring, circulatory support, and other intensive care treatments for patients, whether they be from the internal medicine or the surgery department, who are experiencing severe acute organ failure in respiration, circulation, and metabolic functions.

Division of Emergency Medicine

As the only major disaster medical center in the prefecture, the division admits and treats patients with severe injuries as part of the medical care system for disasters.

Division of Blood Transfusion

In addition to blood transfusions and blood transfusion tests, auto transfusion, and the storage and management of blood products, the division is also responsible for hematopoietic stem cell collection and storage, the regulation and storage of transplants received from the Japan Marrow Donor Program and Japan Cord Blood Bank Network, and other transplant related procedures.

Division of Rehabilitation

Providing specialized rehabilitation treatment to all medical departments as required.

Division of Medical Informatics

Responsible for the management, operation, and development of the integrated hospital information system through which the majority of the hospitals procedures are performed.

Division of Blood Purification

In addition to the introduction and maintenance of care for acute and chronic renal failure, the department is expanding the adaptability of treatment for chronic renal failure patients through surgical support procedures such as removal and adsorption of causative agents, plasmapheresis, and antibody removal etc.

Division of Medical Records

Responsible for the management and storage of outpatient and inpatient hospital medical records. Outpatient records are stored in an automated archive system and can be speedily retrieved as and when required.

Perinatal Medical Center

Providing perinatal care (from pregnancy and deliver, to puerperium and neonatal management) for high risk pregnancies including threatened preterm labor, pregnancy-induced hypertension, congenital abnormalities in fetus, and pregnancy complications in the mother etc.

Division of Clinical Pathology

Utilizing both clinical pathology and cytology, we aim to ensure quick and accurate reporting to the patient.

General Clinical Division

We provide an initial examination and an introduction to the appropriate specialist for those patients unsure of which department to visit.

Pharmaceutical Management Center

While adhering to standards of clinical studies for medicinal and pharmaceutical products, and to enable procedures related to clinical trials and post-marketing clinical studies to run smoothly, the center continues to strive to provide effective and safe new drugs.

Clinical Engineering Center

The center promotes safe and efficient operation of medical equipment through the appropriate placement of highly skilled clinical engineers, in addition to the central management of medical equipment including rental, maintenance, and repairs.

Center of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics

The center conducts HLA testing of transplant candidates and the storage of plasma for cross-matching, and HLA testing and infectious disease screening for organ donors.

Center for Medical Education and Training

In cooperation with prefectural, national, and international medical institutions, the center promotes interdisciplinary education and training, while also supporting environmental improvements such as work-life-balance, to comprehensively contribute to the development of medical care.

Endoscopy and Ultrasonography Center

The center utilizes endoscope and ultrasound procedures for the treatment and diagnosis of various digestive and cardiovascular disorders.

Division of Genetic Counseling

Providing information and psychological support for genetic medicine through genetic counseling. Counseling covers a wide range of issues and is conducted by a clinical genetics specialist accredited by the Japan Society of Human Genetics.

Center for Cancer Registry and Information Services

The center is dedicated to achieving the two major goals of Japan’s "Cancer Control Promotion Plan": to reduce cancer deaths by 10% within ten years, and to reduce the suffering of cancer patients and their families while improving the quality of life of those undergoing treatment.

Consultation Support Center and Cancer Resource Center

The center assists regional cooperation and transfer of information, including support for patients discharged from or transferred to another hospital, to achieve a seamless flow between medical services and nursing care services, and to create an efficient division of roles and cooperation.We offer a cancer consultation and support center as a Cooperative Cancer Treatment Clinic responding to patient's families and members of the community seeking consultation regarding cancer treatment and recovery.

Division of Cancer Chemotherapy

The department organizes various committees, working groups,and multidisciplinary tumor boards, to supervise and manage chemotherapy conducted in the hospital. In particular, it conducts medical care in the outpatient chemotherapy clinic.

Palliative Care Center

Our clinic provides comfort care for families and patients experiencing cancer, illness, or treatment to improve the well being of body, mind, and spirit.

Psychosomatic Division

The center utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy theory for the analysis, diagnosis and treatment of adjustment disorders that present no physical symptoms, namely psychosomatic diseases, neurosis, and malaise.

Liver Disease Consultation Center

The center collects information about liver disease and makes it widely available to patients, their families and health care providers. Furthermore, the center presents new topics in liver disease at public lectures throughout the prefecture.

Division of Nutrition Management

The division aims for the enhancement of treatment effectiveness through the management and co-operation of food services and clinical services. The division’s goal is to enhance the effectiveness of treatment through the provision of a safe and satisfying therapeutic diet and nutrition counseling.

Center for Kidney Disease and Transplantation

The center is engaged in preventing the onset of renal diseases such as diabetic nephropathy, chronic nephritis, nephrosclerosis as well as the development of measures to control disease progression.

Stroke Comprehensive Medical Center

We provide sophisticated skills of treating stroke patients from their acute phase to the secondary preventing phase. Not only neurologists but also neurosurgeons, cardiologists and rehabilitation specialists participate in the care of stroke patients in this center. We are challenging to minimize the impact of stroke which is a leading cause of long term disability in Japan.

Division of Medical Security and Patient Safety

Ensuring patient safety and the prevention of medical errors is our priority. The safety system and educational program that we implemented has minimized errors, and we continue to be committed to maintaining a high level of medical safety.

Division of Infection Control and Prevention

The infection control unit works in cooperation with primary physicians and on-site staff to institute infection prevention measures and support the treatment of infectious diseases.

Department of Pharmacy

While providing the medical staff with enlightenment on the proper use of pharmaceuticals and drug safety information, pharmaceutical support is also provided to patients in the form of drug management guidance.

Division of Nursing

The nurses, caring for patients 24 hours a day, strive to provide nursing care from the patient’s point of view.
